Romania
I believe traveling is both an education and an experience in beauty. There is beauty in the presence of wonder, discovery, food, and stillness, and there is beauty in connecting with our global family.
Romania is one of the most diverse countries in Southeast Europe. Even though the society was traumatised by a dictatorship for 30 years, followed by corruption and migration for the next 30 years, becoming a part of the European family was a step forward to uncovering our values:
People
Nature
Architecture
Traditions and culture
The capital is Bucharest which boasts the second biggest building in the world, the People's Palace, built by the Ceausescu dictatorship which lasted until the 1989 Revolution.
Traveling from one point to another you will discover distinct regions and a few languages. Romania has several main influences: Balkan in the south with a strong Ottoman influence, Slavic in the north and east, and Serbian, Germanic, and Hungarian in the West. You notice these influences in architecture, people, food, language, and religion. This variety was created historically and also geographically by the Carpathian Mountains which offer waterfalls, caves, Transalpina - the highest altitude road in Europe, and hikes, including Molodveanu peak.
Among the diverse regions of Romania, you will find:
Transylvania with its wild nature & famous Dracula castle
Apuseni Szekely where land forests, lakes, thermal baths, Saxon villages, and unspoiled nature await
Dobrogea with ottoman influences and the Black Sea
Banat where the Danube River creates a scenic landscape and the vibrant Timisoara City where revolution began 30 years ago.
Bucuovina and Maramures have a steam train, beautiful cemeteries, rich heritage, vibrant people, and old churches
Delta region where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, a paradise for birds and rich wildlife.
If you like festivals, come enjoy the Garana Jazz Festival or the Cluj or Untold Film festivals!
Within Romania you also find a wide variety of local beliefs and rituals, including a lot of pagan rituals still preserved through the influence of the orthodox religion. Since 1989 and the fall of the communist regime, the church influence has grown exponentially. There are also a number of protestants in Transylvania and muslims in Doborgea.
Some of the highlights:
Via Transilvanica- walking trail from North to south.
Saxons villages - 1000 year-old churches and preserved history in the surrounding villages
Targu Jiu - art and history
Sighisoara- medieval city
I would love to curate the best experience for you and your familly in and around Romania, with inside information tailored to your interests.
